Chiefs Potential Trade Scenarios - Salary Cap Edition

As it stands right now, the Chiefs have a little more than $4.15 million in cap space for the rest of the season. They can make a couple of moves with that money, but it isn’t likely to be a move that would move the needle at a position of need, as it would have to be a rookie contract. So how do they create more space, and what could they get there if they wanted to?

Then, the Chiefs traded for DeAndre Hopkins, restructured Jawaan Taylor, and traded for Joshua Uche. In a short time, the Chiefs roster and salary cap have undergone so many changes.

Where it Started

Before making any moves, the Chiefs started with about $4.15 million in cap space for the rest of the season. Generally speaking, that will be enough to keep them with the cap space needed if injuries happen and for practice squad elevations. With the trades they made, they obviously needed to free up some space, and the easiest place to do that was always with Jawaan Taylor’s contract.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, Taylor’s restructure freed up $5.4 million, meaning the Chiefs should have been around $9.65 million in cap space. After trading for DeAndre Hopkins, it was reported that the Chiefs would be responsible for $3.2 million of his remaining contract. This would leave them with about $6.25 million in cap space.
