State of the Chiefs Passing Game - Divisional Round

Funny enough the story of the game means there are not many third downs to talk about.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes continually moved the ball on the Bills. The Chiefs had four third downs, not including the final drive and the kneel-down. While going 25% on third down would usually kill a team, Mahomes and company never got to third down. The offense was clicking, and players who had struggled all season played complementary parts for the Chiefs. Here’s how the Chiefs fared the last time they played the Bills.

I won’t say that they couldn’t move the ball up and down the field because, at times, they were. However, mistakes continue to keep them from getting losses, and this week is no different in that respect. Two turnovers, one early and one late, with the penalties, kept the Chiefs from winning a game they should have won.

Patrick Mahomes

Knowing where to start with this game and Mahomes’ performance is hard. Just looking at the stats, the game looks very pedestrian. However, watching the game, you saw Mahomes taking shots when he had the chance and putting the ball where only his receivers could catch it. His throw to MVS to start the second half against the Bills got the drive started and showed the NFL that he would continue to target even those who had struggled the most.

Offensive Line

When the Chiefs played the Bills earlier this year, they allowed 11 pressures, including two sacks and five hits on Mahomes. In this game, they didn’t allow a single sack and only allowed one hit on only five pressures. The interior of the offensive line didn’t allow a single pressure the entire game. This will be a key to watch heading into the game against the Ravens, as they are great at getting after the QB.
