The Chiefs RB's cap and draft cost
A look at what the Chiefs have invested in cap and draft capital
The Chiefs have a young stable of backs on the roster and the cost isn’t significant for the position overall cap-wise. They have, however, used a first-round pick on the position so the question becomes has it been worth the draft capital. Let’s take a look at the Chiefs running back room and we will be including the fullback in here as well.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire
Clyde (CEH) was drafted with the 32nd pick of the 2020 NFL draft. Kansas City was fresh off a Superbowl victory in 2019 and had the final pick of the first round. At the time of the selection, I was ecstatic with the pick. I thought he’d step into the offense and really give it a boost at the running back position. To this point, he’s not reached the level I had hoped for and mostly because of injuries.
CEH still has a couple of years left on his contract but this is a make-or-break year for him in Kansas City. After two seasons where he’s been limited by injury, this is his last chance to have a shot at garnering a 5th-year option from the Chiefs which is highly unlikely at this point in time.
