State of the Chiefs Passing Game After Week 7
Mahomes and the receivers took a big step forward in week seven
The Chiefs offense took a big step forward in week seven. Patrick Mahomes threw for over 400 yards and threw 4 touchdowns on the day. He got his receivers more involved in the offense throughout the game and kept pushing the ball down the field. We have to take it all with a grain of salt considering the team they played, but it’s moving in the right direction.

While the entire offense is playing better you’d expect that numbers on third down were better. It doesn’t always work the way you expect and the Chiefs made their third down woes go away because they avoided third down altogether. The Chiefs had 25 first downs on the day compared to only 11 plays on third down against the Chargers. On the day they were 6 for 11 on third down including 2 for 2 on third and short.
Mahomes continues to use his legs to get the Chiefs out of sticky situations and did so again on Sunday with two big third-down runs on third and seven and third and fifteen. His ability to find opportunities to keep the chains moving when they can’t throw for it shows he continues to evolve as a QB. As a result of the way he’s been able to scramble at times, his teammates have seen him take off and become willing blockers to help spring him for a first down.
