State of the Chiefs Passing Game After Week 2
The Chiefs faired a lot better in week two than they did in week one but still several areas to improve
When we looked at the week one passing attack the story was simple. Too many drops and receivers were not on the same page as the quarterback. In week two the Chiefs improved in a key metric that needs to be discussed and given a bit of context. If you missed week one you can find it here.
This will have a little bit of a different focus from week to week depending on how the Chiefs play. While the Chiefs offense is still far from humming it is going in the right direction and the problems that plagued them this week are problems they’ve overcome before.
Patrick Mahomes
After a rough week one, for the most part, Mahomes played better in week two against the Jaguars but I’m sure would still want a couple of throws back. Purely from a stats perspective throwing for over 300 yards is an improvement. The bigger improvement however is his completion percentage. With only two more passes than week one, Mahomes completed 29 passes against the Jaguars.
Mahomes completed almost 71% of his passes in week 2 which is up almost 17% from week one. He also raised his yards per attempt to a respectable 7.44 yards from 5.79 in week one. Mahomes’ efficiency on the day isn’t being seen as much on the field because of all the miscues on offense.
We will talk about the fumbles in a minute, but after only completing 45% of his third-down passes in week one Mahomes completed just under 92% in week two. The problem is that only 42% of his completions went for first downs. The Chiefs faced third and 10 or more 5 times, including 3 times where it was third and 19 or more. That is not a way to be able to sustain any kind of offense moving forward.
