State of the Chiefs Passing Game After Week 5
How does the offense continue to adapt throughout the season?
Week in and week out the Chiefs offense continues to have moments where it looks like they will put up 40 points a game. Then a drive later they are sputtering and unable to get any momentum going. There are lots of different pieces that go into whether or not the offense will be successful week in and week out but until they start being consistent we are going to continue feeling like it’s a lackluster performance.
Patrick Mahomes
Mahomes has continued to show brilliance and the desire to attack down the field even when people are open underneath. The Chiefs offense will always go as far as Mahomes can take them, but on Sunday, his reliance on Travis Kelce became an issue. Kelce is the best to ever play the position and the desire to get him the ball often makes sense. However, throwing him the ball when he’s covered while others on the same side of the field have no one around them will continue to cause issues on offense.
This isn’t to say he doesn’t have great moments that make you remember what makes him so special as a QB. He had a couple of those moments on Sunday hitting Justin Watson on a couple of deep balls that showed off his arm and decision-making. Defenses across the NFL are going to continue to give him passes underneath to slow down the Chiefs’ deep passing game. While it will take more plays to move the ball down the field, Mahomes needs to take the dump-offs to open things up more in the future.
Offensive Line
While it wasn’t a flawless outing by the offensive line they didn’t get called for any penalties on the day. Allowing two sacks in a game for the first time this season was a little surprising but for the most part, Mahomes had time to throw the ball throughout the afternoon.
