State of the Chiefs Passing Game After Week 9
It's almost a microcosm of weeks 7 and 8 in the same game, a tale of two halves.
The Chiefs looked like an offense that couldn’t be stopped on the first drive against the Miami Dolphins. Consistent production and moving the ball down the field made it seem like the Dolphins were in for a long day on defense. The Chiefs even got creative on third down and short and put Skyy Moore in the backfield for him to run a quick route into the flat for a first down. So what happened to change things? The second drive started just about as well as the first drive did. Pacheco had two runs for 17 yards and they looked like they were headed for another score.
After starting the game hot and not getting behind the sticks in the first nine snaps the Chiefs had back-to-back plays that went nowhere. A first down passing play that Mahomes couldn’t get to Perine leaking out of the backfield to a second down run that Pacheco never had a chance on. Third down was a screen to Travis Kelce that went for three yards and they punted.
Patrick Mahomes
After starting hot on the first drive Mahomes wasn’t able to find a rhythm for most of the rest of the first half. While he completed two-thirds of his passes against the Dolphins it was his second-worst performance of the season in yards per attempt at only 6.17 yards. His worst was against the Lions in week one at under 6 yards per attempt but he fared worse against the Dolphins than he did against the Broncos the week before.
