State of Chiefs Passing Game After Week 13
Another week and another set of failures to lead the passing attack
The Chiefs continue to be hit or miss in the passing game. Generally speaking, they’ve had three problems all season: drops, penalties, and turnovers. Mahomes had an interception that likely would have led to at least a field goal, but the Chiefs played relatively mistake-free in the passing game. With a single drop on the night against Pacheco and only one turnover, they still weren’t able to get a win against a Packers team that they are better than.
Patrick Mahomes
Mahomes is continuing to have a subpar year by his standards, and while a lot of that can be attributed to his supporting cast, he isn’t free from blame. Putting the team in bad situations by trying to hold on for a big play, taking drops that are too deep, and a couple of bad decisions are more than this offense can overcome at this point. To be clear, I’m not saying it’s mostly on him, but the Chiefs need to play near perfect to have a chance.
Against the Packers, Mahomes barely cracked 200 yards passing and only threw for a single TD. Two of the drives were thwarted by sacks in the red zone that led to field goals. The Chiefs are who they are this late in the season, and they are likely going to continue to struggle the rest of the year. Mixing in Richie James, more Noah Gray, and more Kadarius Toney could be a start to trying to find a rhythm on offense.
