One of the things I’ve enjoyed about diving into statistics is telling the story of how things are faring for the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes from one year to the next. In 2022 Patrick Mahomes had an MVP season. While he may not have been leading from the start he finished the season strong and was able to walk away as the league MVP.
So how does his start this year compare to last year? The answer may surprise you, but he is doing about the same things as he was compared to 2022. Let’s take a deeper look.
Overall the bigger question for most Chiefs fans is about Mahomes’ record as a starter. In 2022 the Chiefs started the season 2-0 but then dropped a game they should have won to Indianapolis in week three. They followed it up by winning the next week and finished the season's first quarter at 3-1.
Looking at 2023, the Chiefs are in much the same position they were last year, although you could argue 2023 is a little bit better than last year. The loss against Indianapolis hurt the Chiefs because of the conference record. The loss to the Lions won’t affect the future playoff standings most likely as it was a non-conference game.
