With a year left on his contract and working on an extension, with the Chiefs it seemed like it was coming sooner rather than later.
Then free agency started and all hell broke loose. Christian Kirk’s deal seemed extremely rich for the player he’s been so far in the NFL and then Davante Adams was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders and with the trade came a monstrous new contract.
When the news broke my first thought was this was a bad deal for the Chiefs. Adams’ contract looked to be something that would hamstring the Raiders for years but after the numbers have been released I think the Chiefs would be wise to use it to sign Tyreek long term.
Before we dive into what the Adams deal looks like let’s take a look at Hill’s current deal. He’s under contract for one more season with a salary of only $3.435 million but he’s also due a roster bonus of $15 million this season. Hill’s total cap hit in 2022 right now is $21.885 million.
While you would like to carry him at a lower cap hit than close to 10% of the cap $20 million is near the top of the wide receiver market in 2022. The only receivers to make over $21 million in APY are both Davante Adams and DeAndre Hopkins and both are now over $27 million.
So why would the Chiefs be smart to mimic Adams’ new deal for Hill? First, remember Hill is two years younger than Adams and he is a perfect fit for what the Chiefs want to do with Mahomes as the QB. But let’s dive into the numbers and the reality of Adams’ deal with the Raiders.
