Final Numbers on Mike Danna's Extension
We've finally got the numbers on Danna's extension and it's even better than it sounded
The Kansas City Chiefs made a great move by bringing back DE Mike Danna to the team. What was initially reported as a 3-year $24 million deal isn’t quite that rich, like most contracts reported. Danna is under contract for the next three years but only has guaranteed money in 2024 and 2025.
Let’s take a look at the deal.
As part of his new deal, Danna received a $6.5 million signing bonus. The proration of his signing bonus will count as $2.166 million against the cap for the next three years. Mike is also different because he is the first Chiefs player drafted recently who has been given a multi-year deal, which I hope isn’t the last one done this off-season.
2024 Cap Number
Danna's contract is slightly different from most of the Chiefs' contracts. They gave him a fully guaranteed first-year salary of $2.25 million. Most Chiefs signings get the signing bonus plus the league minimum for their first year. Add a workout bonus of $250,000, and Danna’s total cap is $4.666 million for the first year.
2025 Cap Number
In year two, Danna receives a raise of $5.24 million. Of that, $4.25 million is guaranteed, so Danna will be on the roster through at least next season. He still gets the $250,000 workout bonus and an added $510,000 per-game roster bonus. Danna’s total cap number in 2025 is $8.166 million.
2026 Cap Number
When Mike hits 29 in 2026, he will have a base salary of $8.24 million, another workout bonus of $250,000, and another $510,000 per game roster bonus. In 2026, none of his money is guaranteed. His total cap number for 2026 will be $11.166 million.
Reality of the Contract
The real numbers indicate this deal is more like a two-year $15 million deal, or $7.5 per year. It comes in slightly less than Omenihu got in 2023 but still gives Danna a decent payday. Overall, the structure is great for the Chiefs as it keeps his number reasonable for the next two seasons.
