Usually, when players hold out they are holding out for a long-term deal. They may or may not get it, or they at least get a raise for the current year. This year, Chris Jones got neither. In fact, there’s a possibility he won’t even get back all the fines and lost money for 2023. To be clear, the Chiefs can not waive the fines they can only give him a way to get them back.

I waited to post this so I knew how the cap was affected by Jones’ new deal and there has been a lot of confusion about that since it was signed. Surprisingly we have an answer so let’s dive in.

Lost Money

Chris Jones had a $500,000 dollar bonus if he participated in the workout program in Kansas City. While this isn’t a fine he missed out on the chance at making it by skipping the entire Chiefs offseason program. Unlike training camp, other than mandatory minicamp players can skip the entire offseason program without being fined.

Fines

The fines began when Chris Jones skipped mandatory minicamp. Deciding not to attend cost Jones $98,753 dollars. Not a lot considering his salary but it all adds up nonetheless. So far Jones is out $598,753.

When Jones decided to miss training camp and hold out for the entire camp he began racking up $50,000 dollars worth of fines every day. There are several different reports out there about how long the fines last and how many days were missed. The most used number right now is 42 days of camp and preseason. This adds $2.1 million in fines for Chris Jones for this season bringing his total to $2,698,753 so far.

His decision to sit in a luxury box against the Lions instead of reporting to the team cost Jones an additional $1,083,333 in fines. This is one game check of 18 he would earn throughout the regular season and will be treated a little differently with the salary cap but we will get to that in a moment. In total, Jones gave up $3,782,086 for his holdout to try to get a long-term deal.
