Chiefs WR room and Cost of Upgrades
A deeper look into the salary cap and draft capital used on the WR position
If I would have started this series two weeks ago this positional group would have looked a lot different. Yes, Pringle and Robinson would have already been gone to their new teams but nothing shook up this organization more than the Tyreek Hill trade to the Dolphins. There were signs that maybe it wasn’t going to work long term but no one bought into the Chiefs not having Hill on the roster coming opening day of the 2022 season.
Obviously, this trade shook up the organization and put them in a whole new place with cap space and draft capital as well. They were able to make several signings after the trade that probably don’t happen if Hill isn’t traded. With the new first-round pick, second-round pick, and fourth-round pick this year the Chiefs can still make some moves. They also received a fourth and sixth in the 2023 draft. Hill does have a dead cap hit of $1.45 million after the trade.
Juju Smith-Schuster
To me, he’s the number one right now on this team. It’s not where I think the team wants him and I don’t think it’s the right fit for him to maximize his success but that’s something that we will have to see how it plays out this season. Juju had his best success when he was the number 2 receiver and I believe that’s what he and KC had in mind when they signed him.
