Chiefs Team Stats Compared to 2022
It's obvious the offense isn't playing well but how much better is the defense?
It’s amazing to me how much the defense has changed from one year to the next. While the defense began playing lights out towards the end of 2022 they started that way this season and have yet to have a bad game this season. Offensively the Chiefs have struggled throughout this season but surprisingly they aren’t too far from where they were in 2022 at least based on yards. Let’s dive into a comparison.
Team Offensive Stats
When comparing last years offensive stats to this years it has a little bit of a surprising result. I expected a much larger change in effectiveness in the ability to move the ball but that hasn’t really been the case. While the Chiefs aren’t moving the ball as well it’s only about 55 yards a game off their average from last season during the first nine weeks. Something to monitor moving forward after the bye week. They are also averaging about 4 fewer first downs this year compared to last year which tracks about where you’d expect giving the yardage discrepancy.
When you look at offensive scoring the change is a little more drastic but still not as much as I would have guessed. The Chiefs are down about a touchdown a game compared to where the offense was in 2022. Most seasons this would be a much bigger deal but with the defense playing as it has it hasn’t caused the Chiefs to lose more games than they did at the same time last year.
