Chiefs Roster Breakdown - Offense
Let's Take a Look at the Breakdown of the Chiefs roster headed into OTA's
Over the next couple of months, the team will focus on OTAs and a mandatory minicamp. Currently, the Chiefs' roster is mostly set for training camp. Today, we will examine the offense; later this week, we will examine the defense and special teams.
Quarterback - 2
The Chiefs will take four quarterbacks to training camp, which seems to be Reid's sweet spot in Kansas City. Mahomes is the starter, and Wentz will be the backup. I’m guessing the Chiefs will only carry two on the roster when the season starts in September.
Running Back - 4
Currently, the Chiefs have nine running backs on the roster. With Pacheco as the starter and CEH as the primary backup, I believe there is only space for two more players to make the roster in September. Carson Steele is a potential fullback, and that could skew the final roster numbers if the Chiefs decide to go in that direction.
Tight End - 3
This is where the roster starts to get a little more interesting. Kelce is the starter, and Gray and Wiley will also be on the roster. Will someone else force the Chiefs to keep four as they have in the past? Blake Bell is not in KC this year, so it will be interesting to see if the Chiefs need to keep four, especially if they decide to keep a fullback.
Wide Receiver - 6
In 2023, the Chiefs kept seven wide receivers on the roster. They currently have twelve. I don’t see the Chiefs keeping as many wideouts as they did in 2023 this year, so there will be some real competition for receivers five and six. However, the Chiefs are likely to have seven on the active or suspended roster to start the season, with Rashee Rice looking to have a potential suspension at the start of the year. Four of those seven spots are guaranteed to be Brown, Worthy, Watson, and Rice past that the competition is on to fill out the roster.
Offensive Line - 9
The offensive line currently has 15 players on the 91-man roster. If they get into a roster crunch elsewhere, the Chiefs will likely keep nine or ten, with a small chance of only eight. Creed, Trey, Jawaan, Joe, Wanya, Kingsley, and Hunter are guaranteed spots now. That leaves likely two to three spots left for the rest to fight for. CJ Hanson is expected to make the roster as well as a draft pick, and the ninth would likely be Lucas Niang at this point.
I have the Chiefs offense at likely 24 players in September. I would guess there could easily be 25, with an additional tight end added to the roster.
How many would you guess make the final 53 on offense?
I think the Chiefs will keep 4 TEs.
