Over the next couple of months, the team will focus on OTAs and a mandatory minicamp. Currently, the Chiefs' roster is mainly set for training camp. Today, we will examine the defense; earlier this week, we examined the offense and we will still take a look at special teams.
Defensive Tackle - 5
The Chiefs will look at a combination of nine or ten guys on the defensive line overall. Chris Jones is the only DT who, in my mind, is guaranteed to be on the roster when the season starts. Derrick Nnadi, Tershawn Wharton, Neil Farrel, and Mike Pennel will likely be on the roster, but the question is which of those in that group doesn’t make it. All of them may make it, but the development of younger players would be a good sign if it forces one off the roster.
Defensive End - 5
To start the season, the Chiefs will likely have 4 - 6 defensive ends on the roster in some capacity. Omenihu, after his late ACL injury, is a potential PUP player. That leaves likely five spots for defensive ends on the roster. Karlaftis, Danna, and FAU are guaranteed spots. Past that, it could be a mix of several players, and I wouldn’t put it past the team to try to make an addition to the position.
Linebacker - 5
The starters are set in Bolton, Chenal, and Tranquill. The depth will be the big question mark heading into 2024. The Chiefs will likely keep five linebackers during the season, and Cochrane and Jones are the frontrunners, but their spots aren't locked up.
Corner - 5
This will be one of the most exciting positions on the entire roster. McDuffie, Williams, Watson, and Hadden are likely locks to be on the roster. That leaves expected one spot available for a bevy of talented CBs headed by Nazeeh Johnson, who the team still lists as a safety. Corner will be one of the most hotly contested battles of training camp.
Safety - 5
Justin Reid, Bryan Cook, Chamarri Conner, and Jaden Hicks will make the roster; past that, it’s tough to know. Bush made plays in the playoffs but was a practice squad guy most of the season. With the depth at the corner, the Chiefs could decide to keep only four safeties and six CBs.
Who do you think makes the opening-day roster on defense?
