The Kansas City Chiefs restructured pro-bowl defensive end Frank Clark’s deal. While the full details of the deal are not known his APY comes down considerably as he was due over $40 million over the next two seasons.
We are still awaiting clarity on 2023 but here is how 2022 will breakdown. When we get the full numbers this will be updated.
Clark is likely earning a salary of around $7 million. He still has a salary cap bonus proration of $6.8 million for the 2022 season and 2023 season from his signing bonus. 2023 may be a little higher depending on how the deal was structured.
It's also been reported that Clark has $3 million of incentives in 2022 so he can earn back some of that money. In order for it not to be hitting the Chiefs cap in 2022 it would need to be considered not likely to be earned. As an example, he could have an incentive for sacks at over 4.5 since that is the amount he had in 2021.
In essence, the Chiefs are keeping Frank Clark on the roster for 2022 and it’s only costing them about $100K in cap space to do so. If they released him outright in 2022 it would have saved them $12.7 million. With his restructure the Chiefs saved $12.6 million. So it’s a win-win for a team in desperate need of a pass rush.
