Chiefs Release Marquez Valdes-Scantling
This move was expected based on the contract he signed two years ago
The Kansas City Chiefs are releasing MVS to save $12 million in cap space for 2024. He will carry a dead cap hit of $2 million against the salary cap. While the signing didn’t work out great in the regular season, MVS turned it on in the postseason and helped the Chiefs win back-to-back Super Bowls with big plays each year.
This move will help the Chiefs be cap-compliant when the new league year starts with the expectation that Sneed will receive the franchise tag. It also opens up the team to be active at the start of free agency, though more than one signing would require another move or two. The teams’ flexibility because of Mahomes’ contract means they don’t have to restructure before free agency and can move only what is needed to the future.
This is a quick update with much more to come in the coming days, including projections on contracts for L’Jarius Sneed and Chris Jones.
