Chiefs Pick Washington CB Trent McDuffie
With the 21st overall pick in the 2022 draft the Kansas City Chiefs took a CB
I will be the first to admit I was surprised at the pick. More so surprised at the player and position and not so much that Kansas City traded up. Wide receiver wasn’t really an option at 21 after the top six wideouts were drafted in the top 18 picks which also included some very interesting trades for NFL veteran wide receivers.
The key with the McDuffie pick is the Chiefs viewed him as an impact player that could start day one and they saw him as a first-round talent. Veach even told media and fans alike a few days before the draft that they only had 16-18 picks with first-round grades.
So what do the Chiefs get with Trent McDuffie as a starter at CB. Let’s take a look at what he brings to the team.
Ryan Tracy’s Athletic Matrix
A quick look at Ryan’s Athletic Matrix shows what the Chiefs are getting in McDuffie. His film, completion percentage, yards per completion allowed, and missed tackle percentage. Production-wise the Chiefs got one of the best CB’s in the draft! Athletically he is closer to the middle of the road as a CB but his football IQ makes up for the lack of upper athleticism.

McDuffie is highly rated by Pro Football Focus and was seen as their #11 overall prospect in the 2022 draft. Getting him at 21 was a steal for their Chiefs in their estimation of value.

RAS Score
Athletically McDuffie is a very athletic CB that scored very high as the RAS scale is only a 10-point scale. Had he been a little taller he likely would have been much closer to a 10 as that is his lowest weakness. This is also another reason I didn’t see McDuffie being a Chiefs pick is that he doesn’t fit their typical scheme desires. They want CB’s that are over 6 feet tall and have arms over 31 inches long. It’ll be something to watch moving forward.

Financial Terms
Let’s take a look at the contract that McDuffie is going to sign as a rookie. The numbers may change a little bit with negotiations but this should be a good place to start.
Taking a look at these numbers it’s pretty easy to see why the draft may continue to evolve over the next several seasons. A good to great CB is easily going to make more than the total value of McDuffie’s contract of just under $16 million in one year. Drafting high positional value positions early in the draft significantly helps a team save if they hit on the prospect. Plus first-round picks have an added bonus of having a potential 5th-year option which means the team could keep them for another season for a reduced amount.
I was shocked by the pick. I was thinking Johnson at edge. But after looking at everything I’m glad we got him.
