Chiefs Needed Space for Draft Class
Here's a breakdown of the money the Chiefs need to sign their draft class
As I talked about in my last article found here, the Chiefs will need a decent portion of their available cap space to sign their draft class. Let’s take a look at a breakdown of the money they need to sign their class as it is without making any trades.
All numbers are based on the total amount that is needed for the 2022 season. One of the factors that will play into all the 7th round picks is that they will all be under the lowest salaries already on the roster as it counts only the top 51 salaries.
Is anyone else as excited as I am about the NFL draft being in Kansas City in 2023?
First Round Picks
Pick 29 has a cost of $2,498,355. This is about $1.6 million over the cost of the players already under the the top 51 calculation.
Pick 30 has a cost of $2,429,754. This is again about $1.6 million over the cost of the players already under the top 51 calculation.
In total these two picks will cost the Chiefs about $3.2 million against the cap once they sign their contracts.
Second Round Picks
Pick 50 has a cost of $1,384,880. This is about $500K above the cost of the lowest contracts on the top 51.
Pick 62 has a cost of $1,126,587. This is about 300K above the cost of the lowest contracts on the top 51.
In total the Chiefs will need about 800K to sign their second-round picks.
Third Round Picks
Pick 94 has a cost of $965,436. This is about 70K above the cost of the lowest contracts on the top 51.
Pick 103 has a cost of $954,876. This is about 60K above the cost of the lowest contracts on the top 51.
The Chiefs would need a total of about 130K to sign their third-round draft picks.
Fourth Round Picks
Pick 121 has a cost of $924,844. This is about 30K above the cost of the lowest contracts on the top 51.
Pick 135 has a cost of $901,086. This is about 6K above the cost of the lowest contracts on the top 51.
The Chiefs will need about 36K of their cap space to sign their fourth-round picks.
Fifth Round
The Chiefs do not currently have a fifth-round pick as it was traded for Mike Hughes last season.
Sixth Round
The Chiefs do not currently have a sixth-round pick as it was traded for Melvin Ingram last season.
Seventh Round Picks
Pick 233 has a cost of $734,755. This is currently under the threshold for the top 51 players on the roster.
Pick 243 has a cost of $730,126. This is currently under the threshold for the top 51 players on the roster.
Pick 251 has a cost of $728,282. This is currently under the threshold for the top 51 players on the roster.
Pick 259 has a cost of $727,665. This is currently under the threshold for the top 51 players on the roster.
Signing these players to the roster won’t count against the salary cap until after final cuts.
Much more to come as we dive into how the Chiefs have built their roster and the money they’ve spent at different positions.
Seeing as the Chiefs already have 77 players under contract, and they can only carry 95, if would appear they’re not going to draft more than 10.
Its critical to understand the cost of each pick vs the cap space available.
I expect draft day trades!
