Chiefs DT Chris Jones Could be Out Even More Money
If Jones doesn't report on Tuesday he could lose another $5 million
Chris Jones has held out for the entire offseason and it looks like he could hold out until week 8 of the regular season. While it’s possible he could do this he is continuing to risk more potential money waiting on a contract. At this point, he’s going to be fined over $1.8 million for the time he’s missed. He’s also out $500 thousand for a workout bonus. This pales in comparison to missing game checks but there is another twist.
If Jones continues his holdout past Tuesday the Chiefs will put him on the Did Not Report list and he will not count against the 53-man roster. According to the CBA, there is another issue Jones could face. If he doesn’t report and is moved to that list the Chiefs have the ability to ask for a roster exemption even once he does report. This would potentially be another two weeks he wouldn’t count on their roster.
The bigger issue though is that if they are granted the roster exemption they could withhold his weekly paychecks for those weeks. This would amount to just under $2.2 million in 2023. It becomes a compound effect however if he is franchised then in 2024 he would miss out on $2.6 million of additional compensation for his franchise tender.
I’ve heard rumors of 27 or 28 but I’m not sure
Chris, what do you think that the Chiefs are offering CJ?
Thank you for all of your great work!
