Chiefs Draft and Salary Cap Update
With most of Free Agency over let's look at the Chiefs capital situations
This is a simple update on where the team is as of their last signing Ronald Jones.
After a flurry of whirlwind moves including trading away Tyreek Hill the Chiefs are left with a lot of draft capital and a lot of cap space as well.
Salary Cap
Let’s dive deeper into the numbers and there will be much more coming soon on diving into the Chiefs spending at each position and on each side of the ball. Currently, the Chiefs have $17.084 million of cap space according to Overthecap.com.
I bring this part of it up because it’s an important piece to remember going forward. Most of the Chiefs draft picks will count for more against the cap than the players they will replace on the top 51 roster right now so the $5.7 million is including just the difference.
I’ve said multiple times and in multiple places, the likelihood of the Chiefs making all their picks is very small. In fact, in Veach’s four drafts as GM, the Chiefs have made exactly 6 picks in each draft. I also highly doubt that that trend will continue this year unless they make a big trade before or during the draft which is also like Veach.
Draft Picks
Speaking of all the Chiefs draft picks let’s get into all the picks that they now hold in 2022.
Original picks are bolded.
First round - Picks 29 & 30
Second round - Picks 50 & 62
Third round - 94 & 103(Compensatory for Poles hiring)
Fourth round - 121 & 135
Fifth round - None, Orlando Brown trade
Sixth round - None, Melvin Ingram trade
Seventh round - 233, 244, 251, 260
Another thing to note is the Chiefs are believed to use the Jimmy Johnson point system when it comes to trading picks so keep this handy if you want to figure out what picks you could trade to other teams for their picks which you can find here.
Based on the picks in the Tyreek Hill trade the Chiefs trade package would have equated to the 13th pick in the draft in 2022.
Coming very soon a deeper dive into the cap and how the Chiefs have built their roster at each position and on both sides of the ball.
