53 Man Roster Projection After Week 2 of the Preseason
Here's how I think the Offensive roster is shaking out right now
After the Chiefs beat the Cardinals in Arizona the roster is a lot closer to taking shape than it has been in a while. With a good performance on all levels, the Chiefs showed they have a deep roster at multiple positions. Not only is their roster deep but it is deeper than it has been since Reid took over in Kansas City over 10 seasons ago.
Quarterback - 3
Patrick Mahomes - No explanation needed.
Blaine Gabbert - I’ll list him as the second QB but Shane Buechele has shown an ability to wonder if he could be the future backup in Kansas City.
Shane Buechele - Has played very well in the preseason and looked great with the ones against Arizona.
Running Back - 4
Isiah Pacheco - Hasn’t gotten any snaps in the preseason but still the starting back headed into the season.
Jerick McKinnon - Best 3rd down back on the roster and a shifty playmaker when he gets out in space. Also a big special teams guy.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire - I think he’s on the roster but mainly because they don’t gain anything from cutting him financially.
La’Mical Perine - He’s jumped Deneric Prince at this point and will likely be the fourth back on the roster.
Wide Receiver - 7
Kadarius Toney - Could end up on IR after final cuts or could play week one.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling - Could play a much bigger role on the team this year if he and Mahomes can solidify their deep ball chemistry during the regular season.
Skyy Moore - He’s a starter and I think he has a big season this year as he started to look more and more comfortable as last season went on.
Justin Watson - The team loves him and his contract is guaranteed so he isn’t likely going anywhere.
Richie James - I’m not sure what to make of the lack of James’ usage in the second game but he’s their returner regardless.
Rashee Rice - Looks a lot better in the preseason than Skyy Moore from last year. The Chiefs know what they have and I expect a bigger role as the season goes on this year.
Justyn Ross - He’s on the team and his route running looks to be a strength which is something to say at his size. He still needs work on reading a defense and being where he’s supposed to be but he makes the roster.
Tight End - 3
Travis Kelce - Again nothing to really say here.
Noah Gray - Looks like he could receive more targets this season.
Blake Bell - I don’t like this but based on usage it seems to be the case. Also possible they go with only two tight ends on cut-down day to bring Bell back after moving someone to IR.
Tackles - 4
Donovan Smith and Jawaan Taylor - Starters
Prince Tega Wanagho - He’s their swing tackle this year
Wanye Morris - I think this is likely his redshirt season and there’s no reason to rush him.
Guards - 4
Joe Thuney & Trey Smith - Starters
Nick Allegretti - He’s the sixth lineman and likely the first off the bench for any of the interior positions.
Darian Kinnard - While he may not have looked the part at times in the preseason I don’t think they will let him go this year.
Center - 1
Creed Humphrey - Starter
Offense - 26 players
The Chiefs have generally gone higher on offense than on defense in the past but it’s going to be interesting to see how it could change this year. Let me know what you think.
I still like Prince as a bigger back and better pass catcher.i think you could sneak Perine on the practice squad
Prince v Perine is the only slot w/ which I disagree n “O”. Good article!
